There are claims that Arsenal are considering loaning out Per Mertesacker so as to ascertain if he deserves to be handed a new contract at the club.

The German international has made no competitive appearance for the Gunners since sustaining an injury in pre-season.

He has since returned to training last December but will face a tough battle getting playtime with the presence of Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista.

The contract of the 32-year-old captain expires by June which is why the club want him to go out there to prove he is worth a new one.

Matt Hughes' writeup states:

"Arsenal are unlikely to agree a loan deal for Mertesacker with a rival Premier League club, particularly given the embarrassment that Jack Wilshere’s success for Bournemouth has brought them, and a return to Germany is the most likely outcome.

"While Arsène Wenger said last week that he was open to extending Mertesacker’s contract, that is not guaranteed and it is contingent upon him proving his form and fitness during the rest of the season."

I wonder if he will be loaned out injured. After all, Wenger said last week that Mertesacker has suffered a setback and will not be available for another three weeks at least.
