The Arsenal defender joined the German side on a season long loan deal last year, and contained in the clause was his ability to make the switch a permanent one by the end of the present campaign.
It now seems Hamburg are ready to totally take the Swiss international off the hands of Arsenal, according to a revelation by Mirko.
"I am happy that he's staying with us for the next few years as he's a stabilising influence at the centre of our defence," the 46-year-old coach said in an interview with reporters.
How long he will stay or how much the 27 year old is going to earn was not disclosed but some local sources claim he has agreed a deal that will keep him at Hamburg till the year 2016.
The Arsenal outcast has so far made 22 appearances for a side who are currently in a battle to avoid relegation as they sit second from the bottom with just six games to go.
This news will definitely come as a relief to many Arsenal fans who had since been praying for this day to come. I was opportuned to see a reaction of one this morning and he was jubilating as if we have finally won the Champions League. Even though he made us go through a series of nightmares while with us, courtesy demands that we show him respect. Let's bid him farewell and not say negative things about him. Best of luck Johan.
