After Manchester United and Barcelona made their intentions of signing the Belgian star known, it was believed Arsene Wenger was not willing to sell a second player to the Red Devils after the sale of Robin Van Persie and as I speak a £15 million deal has been struck. The 28-year old joined the Gunners from Ajax in 2009. His first few season were impressive but along the line he suffered a cruciate ligament injury which kept him out for almost a whole season. He returned to action and before we knew what was happening, the ex-Arsenal captain had a setback at a time when Per Mertesacker was already signed by the current FA Cup Champions.
In subsequent seasons, he struggled to break back into the starting lineup all to no avail and this warranted his search for greener pastures. Vermaelen made a total of 150 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions scoring 15 goals altogether.
Vermaelen would be Barcelona's second centre-back signing this summer having previously signed Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia.
