UNIBEN Student Shot Dead at Ekosodin After Champions League Match.

Even though this news is not Arsenal-related, I just considered posting it since it relates to football and when it happened, Arsenal was one of the teams having a match.

A student of the University of Benin was gunned down at a football viewing centre at Ekosodin on Tuesday night just as fans were trooping out of the place.

Ekosodin is a village in Benin City, Edo State. It is mostly dominated by undergraduates of UNIBEN who do not stay in the school hostel. It is a dreaded place where many do not love visiting because of the high degree of violence and oppression present in there.

If we can all remember, there were a series of Champions League matches on Tuesday night; Arsenal v Anderlecht, Real Madrid v Liverpool and so on and it was after the games that this ugly incident occurred. As the victim simply identified as James was leaving for home, he was attacked by suspected cultists who fired shots into the head of the 300 level student of the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. The corpse was later moved to the Accidents and Emergency Unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where he was confirmed dead.

Three weeks ago, a final year student was also gunned down at Ekosodin on one Saturday evening. After that, another 300 level student of the Chemistry Department was sent to the world beyond on Friday, 24th October, 2014 at about 7pm. His own case was a bit brutal as he was axed to death on the university campus.

After the most recent case occurred, some who were close to the deceased said they do not think he belonged to any cult while some said it might have been a mistaken identity but who knows? As the saying goes ‘You cannot judge a book by its cover’ so…….
