Arsenal Begin Talks With Family of German Star.

The Metro have reported that Arsenal are currently in talks with the family of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan who has refused to renew his contract at the club.

The 24-year-old's contract will expire in the summer of 2016 and even though Dortmund have not made it official that they want to sell him out, it is sure that they will certainly do that as they aren't so stable financially to allow him leave as a free agent.

Being that Dortmund will not be playing in the Champions League next season, it will be difficult to convince him to stay so Arsenal are now going to seize this opportunity to snatch him from Germany and bring him down to London as a Gunner. Manchester United are also believed to be in the race for his acquisition and there are even suggestions by the Sunday times that a deal may had been agreed between the two parties.

Arsenal's interest in the German star is understandable, and due to the rise of Francis Coquelin, Arsene Wenger may potentially be seeking a different type of midfielder.

When analysing our defeat to Swansea City, a player with the qualities of Coquelin isn’t required when a team comes to the Emirates Stadium to defend in numbers. Wenger withdrawing the Frenchman for Jack Wilshere on the hour mark may have been a preview of how the boss sees us moving forward.

A player capable of dictating the pace of our game from deep is required in games when teams come to park the bus, and Gundogan fits that profile perfectly.
