Last month, Petr Cech arrived the Emirates Stadium from Chelsea and the question of 'which of the goalkeepers will the club retain and who will be sent packing?' arose. It was initially rumoured that David Ospina will be the one to make way but that was a wrong guess afterall.
Wojciech Szczesny is on his way to Italy as Arsene Wenger has decided to send him out on loan to AS Roma who will pay €400 000 for the deal, according to the Goal website.
The Poland international lost his place to Ospina at the start of the second half of last season after a horrible display which saw the Gunners begin the year with a 2-0 loss away at Southampton. He made matters worse by smoking some cigarette in the dressing room shower after the game, an offence which he was heavily fined for.
Even though Arsene Wenger claimed Szczesny was not dropped as a result of that smoking incident, he did not start any Premier League game from that time onward.
The 25-year-old will now head to Roma on loan with an option to make the deal permanent as time goes on. Meanwhile, Damian Martinez who was Arsenal's third goalkeeper last season will join Ospina to provide competition for new recruit, Petr Cech.
I believe Szczesny will be somehow disappointed with this decision to loan him out of the club. He said after the signing of Cech that he would love to remain at Arsenal and fight for his place but as we speak, that dream seems to have been shattered as he may end up not returning to North-London.
Several Arsenal fans can now heave a sign of relief. What they wanted had finally happened. They showed displeasure when a possible exit for Ospina was being reported. According to them, they would rather keep Ospina and sell out Szczesny.
