Ozil: Why I Left Real Madrid to Sign for Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder, Mesut Ozil has through an extended interview revealed why he left Real Madrid to sign for the Gunners back in the summer of 2013.

The German international who joined Arsenal for a club record fee of £42.5million stated that his ambition to work under Arsene Wenger was the main reason why he did not think twice before accepting to make that career-changing switch.

Ozil explained, "Arsene Wenger was definitely the main reason I signed here," adding, "He's a great football man."

"He always qualifies for the Champions League knockouts as a team. We are really happy we have such a great manager. He knows how to prepare a team and the players. He's very experienced.

"I came here to develop further under Wenger, to learn more from such a great manager."

The 2014 World Cup winner has been on top form so far this season and he himself said after the 2-1 victory over Manchester City that he is in the best form of his career. In this interview, he disclosed that his idol has been French legend Zinedine Zidane, his source of inspiration.

"When he did tricks, I wanted to do the same. I always admired Zidane. He was a very down-to-earth person," the 27-year-old said.

"I watched how he did his passes. He didn't do tricks for the sake of it. He never wanted to show off. He just played a clever game. He's the player who decides games. I watched his technique and tried to do that in my game, and a lot of times it worked."

Ozil now has 15 assists from 17 league games, the highest in the Premier League and the top five European leagues. He also tops the assist chart for the player with the most assists in Europe since 2008.
