Before their tour of the United States of Nigeria (sorry America), Arsenal lost Per Mertesacker to a serious injury problem in their 1-1 preseason draw against Lens in France and as if that was not enough, another centre-back added his name to the club's injury list on Sunday.

Per Mertesacker after sustaining that injury was diagnosed and ruled out of first team action till next year. This made a lot of fans call for an immediate replacement to enable them have a strong defence by the start of the new campaign. At that time, no one foresaw more woes approaching.

Matters got worse when another player in that department got hit with an ugly fitness issue few minutes to the end of their 3-2 win over Manchester City in Gothemburg on Sunday evening. It was Gabriel Paulista who twisted his ankle after a challenge with Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Brazilian was horribly injured and had to be stretchered off the pitch. He later left the stadium on crutches and in a protective boot. Scan results are still pending so we do not know for how long he will have to remain on the sideline but one thing is for sure; he will miss the Liverpool game.

What this means is that Arsene Wenger will begin the 2016/17 Premier League season without any top central defender unless he signs one before then. With Mertesacker and Gabriel out and Laurent Koscielny still match rusty after a Euro short break, the only options Arsenal would  have in their first set of fixtures would be Rob Holding, Kristian Beilik and Calum Chambers who are all still short of the required experience to face a scary attack from oppositions.

The transfer window is still open and it is expected that Arsenal will make new additions to their squad. The fans are seriously waiting for top new arrivals.
