Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal were in a move to sign Everton's Romelu Lukaku before he joined Chelsea in 2011.

The impressive start to the Belgian's career at Anderlecht birthed interest from top clubs and the Gunners who were also in the race could do nothing much to stop him from heading to Chelsea.

According to Wenger, his hopes of signing Lukaku got buried at the moment he joined the Blues in a £17 million transfer deal.

“I knew him when he played in Belgium for Anderlecht,” he said.

“He came very early for Chelsea, after that, when a player is at a big London club it’s difficult to get him.”

Lukaku's class would have had a great impact on Arsenal had they signed him back then. The youngster who is regarded as one of the best young strikers boasts about 100 career league goals.

The fact that he is the first choice striker in the Belgium national side testifies more of his skill and talent.
