Arsene Wenger says he wants Olivier Giroud to remain at Arsenal even though he has made him know that nothing goes for nothing.

The Frenchman while speaking to pressmen stated that his fellow compatriot is still a vital part of his plans at the club but wants the striker to step up and fight for his place.

He has lost his spot to Alexis Sanchez who has since taken control of the central forward role while he was out through injury.

The French international is now more of a super sub, something he isn't really happy about. He has made only two starts since making a comeback from the medical room.

He has shown that he can deliver by scoring five times since his arrival and a new contract offer to keep him at the club beyond 2018 is on the books.

However, Wenger wants him to accept his current fate at the club and realise he is no longer the indisputed striker he used to be in those days.

“If you have only one striker, the press says ‘why don’t you buy another striker?'”, he said.

“Once you buy one more they say ‘how can you keep him happy? I want Giroud to stay, I want Giroud to extend his contract. He is a very important player at the club, on the pitch and off the pitch.

“I want him to stay but, if he signs, he has to live with the competition. He has to decide if he can live with what is going on, but personally I like Giroud very much.

“You cannot keep them all happy but our job is we produce every weekend unhappy people.

It is believed that Giroud is worried over his lack of starts and wants a January transfer but his agent has come out to say that such reports are false.
