Mesut Ozil has finally given the reason for his under-performance in Arsenal's games against Everton and Manchester city.

The German international was virtually missing from both fixtures which came up shortly before Christmas and this earned him so much criticism.

The midfielder believes he was unable to make much impact in those games because the team as a whole struggled to click into gear.

In an interview with Metro, Ozil said: “The expectations for me are raised each year.

“If I have one bad game after 10 good ones, there’s immediate criticism.

“We didn’t have much more than 20 per cent of the ball and as a team couldn’t perform, so I couldn’t play my game.”

Arsenal recorded 2-1 defeats in both games and that has had a negative effect on their title push. They are currently in fifth position as they prepare to visit the Liberty Stadium for a game with swansea City on Saturday afternoon.
