Mirror columnist John Cross has admitted he has never seen Arsene Wenger in the sort of mood he was in on Wednesday night.
The Frenchman faced humiliation and massive criticism for Arsenal's 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the last 16 of the Champions League and according to Cross, he is as broken as never before.
"I have covered Arsene Wenger on a regular basis for 20 odd years", Cross wrote.
"And I have never seen him like this before. He looks a broken man and it's almost sad to see because he is truly one of the all time great managers.
"It looks as if the end game has begun and, in truth, maybe the best thing would be for Arsenal to announce now that he is going at the end of the season.
"That would surely change the mood, get the fans behind the team and also give Wenger the sort of send off that he deserves after 20 years.
"Sadly, the trouble is that those early glory days - the wonderful Doubles, trophies and Invincibles season - are in danger of being tarnished by this sorry meltdown.
"That is the biggest shame in all of this because Wenger should be remembered among the top three managers of the Premier League, arguably behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho."
