Jose Mourinho's laudation of Arsene Wenger at the Laureus World Sports Awards held on Monday has come as a surprise to the former.
This is because both managers during their reign in the Premier League maintained a cat and rat relationship.- not for personal reasons but as a result of the battle for supremacy.
One would expect that the many fights and verbal swings they directed at each other will make them enemies for life but luckily, this is not so.
Jose managed Chelsea and Manchester United where he recently got sacked. It was when he was at Stamford Bridge on two different occasions that their feud was tenser.
However, that did not stop the Portuguese from admitting the obvious as he said that Wenger is one of the best managers in football history.
Reacting to this, Wenger, when asked, revealed that he did not expect such from his arch-rival, the one that called him a specialist in failure at a time.
“That is a very good question,” he replied as to what was the biggest surprise, the award or Mourinho praising him.
“It was a surprise, yes. We had some good fights at times.”
Wenger received a well-deserved accolade after a successful 22-year reign at Arsenal. The Lifetime Achievers Award of the Year was handed to the 69-year-old by Cesc Fabregas and Del Piero.
Laureus is a worldwide organisation aimed at tackling the world's social problems through the power of sports
