Augsburg have sacked assistant Jens Lehman as well as their head coach, Manuel Baum, due to their inability to stir the club towards the right direction.

The clearout which was officially announced on Tuesday also affected technical director Stephan Shwarz.

The Bundesliga side have appointed former Mainz and Wolfsburg boss Martin Schmidt to take over the reins at the club.

Lehman only joined them in January having been allowed to leave when an overhaul was taking place soon after Arsene Wenger's departure.

Under him and his boss, Augsburg have struggled to get a decent position  They are four points away from the relegation zone and have managed just two victories in their last eigh games.

It is clear from sporting director Stephan Reuter's comment that the 4-0 loss of the weekend triggered their decision to take swift action.

"We have given everything in the last few weeks and months to get out of this difficult situation together," he said.

"After the defeat to Hoffenheim and the very volatile performances beforehand, we have decided to make a clean break in order to lay the foundations for success in the final weeks of the season and in the future."

The decision to sack the lot is a progressive one considering their stat of 25 points from a whopping 28 league matches in which they scored 37 and conceded 54 goals.

Augsburg have been knocked out of the DFB Pokal at the quarter-final stage. A late extra-time goal from Leipzig ended their journey in the cup competition last week.
