Shkodran Mustafi's recent comments have not gone down well with Arsenal fans whose hopes of seeing their wish come to pass seems to have been dealt a heavy blow.
A look at the Gunners' campaign so far will reveal some lapses especially in the defence department and if we are to pick out a major culprit, it would be Mustafi.
The German international committed series of blunders from game to game. If he wasn't falling unnecessarily like the Walls of Jericho, he was making silly tackles to earn fouls for opponents.
This menace caused supporters to call for his quick eviction from the club. They did not want to see him in their colours beyond the end of the season but from the 27-year-old's revelation, it is clear that he has got no plans to leave.
The centre-back told Kicker: “I do not know where these messages come from. It’s funny, I’ve been here for almost three years, and after half a year, it was speculated that I would change soon.
“I am a player of Arsenal, I have a contract until 2021, and then there is no news. If they exist, I will announce them and not sneak away.”
It is the normal thing for a player of his level to want to remain at a club like Arsenal where he does not have the quality to be in the first place. What he has said is what he wants. The club may have their own plans which is to relieve him of his duties with them.
I would be surprised to see Mustafi at Arsenal next season as that will mean that we have not left our past doings of keeping below par players when we ought to go for better ones.
