Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wears the number 14 shirt at Arsenal but in a recent revelation made by him, that was not what he wanted.
He spoke of his initial choice, why he couldn't lay his hands on it and the reason behind his latter one.
The Gabonese international joined the Gunners in the winter transfer window of 2018. He has since then contributed immensely to their goal record of Arsenal especially with his healthy partnership with Alexandre Lacazette last season in which he earned himself the Premier League Golden Boot.
On arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £56 million, Aubameyang faced the challenge of securing a kit number.
What he had in mind was the number 7 shirt. Unfortunately, it was already the property of Henrikh, Mkhitaryan, so he had to look elsewhere.
Even at that, he did not just go for any random number, he put a factor into consideration - his idol, Thierry Henry.
“I’d always admired Arsenal because of the big history and players like Thierry Henry,” Aubameyang told the club’s official website.
“He was always an example for strikers and because I am also fast and score goals, I always looked up to him.
“He’s the reason why I took the No 14 shirt.
“To be honest, when I arrived I actually wanted No 7, but Micki [Henrikh Mkhitaryan] had already taken it.
“So I thought, ‘Why not follow in the footsteps of a legend?’ I’m just really proud to wear the 14 shirt and I hope to honour it.”
