Medical for First Arsenal Winter Signing Set

Pablo Mari in London for Medical

Arsenal are close to bringing in their first signing of the winter transfer window that has been a bit silent at their end since it started.

The club hierarchy have been in talks with Flamengo over a loan move that will eventually lead to a permanent deal for Pablo Mari, a centre-back.

Mari is a 26-year-old defender that once stayed with Manchester City but played no single match for them as he was always on loan at one club or the other.

After three loan spells at Girona, NAC and Deportivo La Coruna in three consecutive seasons, the Spaniard headed out to Brazil where he signed for Flamengo.

He won the Copa Liberadoes and Brazilian Serie A in his short stay there. The former was Flamengo's first in 38 years. He recorded 22 and 5 appearances in the league and cup competitions respectively.

He is now in London for his medical prior to signing for Arsenal. A footage from Goal's Charles Watts shows Mari at the Heathrow Airport answering 'Yes, of course' upon being asked if he is excited to sign for Arsenal.

He will be Mikel Arteta's first signing since he took over as Arsenal head coach in late December. Mari would be no stranger to him being that he knew him back at Manchester City.

The deal should be wrapped up before the Gunners come up against Bournemouth in the Emirates FA Cup on Monday night.
