On Thursday night, Arsenal bounced back well by beating the same side that gave them their first loss of the season.
On Monday, we made a trip to Anfield only to return with a disappointing 3-1 result from what was our second meeting with the Reds in the ongoing campaign.
Tonight, it was another encounter with them though in a different competition, the Carabao Cup. The Gunners pulled a revenge by sending them out of the tournament till next season.
The lineup was far different from the one of three days ago with the boss taking out eight players. Gabriel returned to the heart of defence, Alexandre Lacazette dropped to the bench while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was completely exempted.
Eddie Nketiah's hesitation very early in the encounter made us lose a golden chance. Granit Xhaka sent a clean long pass to Nicolas Pepe who then delivered to Joe Willock. Willock made a pass to Nketiah but it was not well utilised.
Our goalkeeper Bernd Leno made saves that mattered all through the game. Of note was the ones he pulled on the brink of halftime. The German denied Jota's header from going in. The follow-up by Minamino struck the bar.
Virgil van Djik played a close-range shot which also Leno coordinated so well. He went on to prevent Grujic and Jota from bagging goals.
It was still goalless at the end of full time so the game had to be decided by a penalty shootout. Coincidentally, we played Liverpool in this same round of the competition last season and the winner also emerged through a shootout. Arsenal were not lucky in that occasion.
For the first day of the month of October, it was Arsenal that triumphed in the fourth round to head to the quarter-final. In the third round last week, we beat Leicester City.
See below how we earned our 5-4 scoreline at Anfield.
