Former Liverpool centre-back, Stepane Henchoz, has slammed the choice of captaincy selection in the Swiss national team.

Current captain, Stephan Lichtsteiner, is on the verge of retirement and Granit Xhaka who is likely to be his successor is one seen by the legend as 'not worthy'.

Henchoz is of the view that Xhaka's display at the Russia 2018 World Cup raises questions of patriotism, hence, his disqualification as potential captain of the national team.

The Arsenal midfielder made the headlines for a double-headed eagle celebration after scoring in Switzerland's 2-1 victory at the World Cup, one which he has already rendered an apology for.

“I think the captain has to represent the Swiss team and Switzerland, Xhaka does not do that,” former Liverpool defender Henchoz argued to Blick.

"This would be a real problem. Players like [Yann] Sommer, [Stephan] Lichtsteiner or [Fabian] Schar, who represent traditional Switzerland, could feel excluded, just like fans who might not be able to identify with the team.

"The Swiss players without a migration background and Swiss fans, they would feel marginalised.”

Xhaka was heavily fined by football governing body, FIFA, for what it termed a 'politically inflammatory' act that could spark diplomatic tension.

The 25-year-old midfielder who is of Albanian ancestry has started all games for Arsenal so far this season but has been below par so far causing fans to demand his demotion to the bench.
