Arsenal vs Brentford is a game to remember. It was another night of maximum anxiety for us the fans who hoped to see our dear club progress to the next round. Luckily for us, we got the required result against a lower division side.
The team for the night was greatly altered with Unai Emery making nine changes to the side that faced Everton on Sunday. Summer signing, Bernd Leno, Rob Holding, Danny Welbeck as well as Emile Smith Rowe made the starting eleven while the likes of Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were totally left out.
Before tonight's game, the Gunners have crashed out at this stage of the competition only once in the last 15 years and the record was improved upon in what was the season's first appearance for Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.
Also worthy of note is the fact that Arsenal have not played against Brentford since May 1947 - a top flight encounter which ended 1-0 in Arsenal's favour.
Arsenal have now made it to the fourth round of the tournament, thanks to an impressive display from the red and white army who left no stones unturned in their battle for glory.
Danny Welbeck opened scoring with a first half header from a Matteo Guendouzi cross which originated from Mhkitaryan's short pass from a corner kick.
The English international extended the lead with a short range strike to make it a brace to his name. The buildup to that goal involved Leno, Lichtsteiner, Mhkitaryan, Iwobi, then Monreal who was captain for the night.
Iwobi saw his penalty call turned down, Mhiki had two chances but none helped change the result. What would end up being a consolation was gotten by the visitors via a free-kick which drove past our goalkeeper.
The introduction of Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette helped put more pressure on the already destabilized Brentford side.
Stoppage time witnessed another goal and it was for Arsenal. Lacazette was the man that made it 3-1, thus clearing all tension that has built up in many's body system.
The win means that we will get to discover our next opponents in the competition shortly after we host Watford at the Emirates Stadium this weekend. The Carabao Cup fourth round draw will be live at 9pm UK time on Saturday.
Big ups to Unai Emery for starting well on this front. His approach to the game shows he attaches much importance to the competition. Will we be able to make it to the final like we did last season?
Oh! I almost forgot to state that Welbeck is the first Premier League player to score in three different club competitions this season. Nice one!
