Arsenal have completed another signing on the ongoing transfer window. Firstly, Willian was acquired via a free transfer from Chelsea then Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari got permanent deals.
Today, the club has added another in person of Gabriel dos Santos Magalhaes who left Lille to start a new era at the Emirates Stadium. His contract is long-term.
The 22-year-old centre back has been given the number 6 jersey that was previously worn by ex skipper Laurent Koscielny.
Prior to signing for Lille in 2017, Gabriel had played for Avai FC where his career began. He enjoyed loan spells at French side Troyes then later at Dinamo Zagreb.
He returned to stamp his place in Lille and was instrumental in his side's top-4 finish. The Brazilian also featured in all six Champions League group stage matches for them.
His arrival adds to the growing number of Brazilians in the Arsenal team. We've got David Luiz, Gabriel Martinelli, Willian before him. Edu factor?
Edu had this to say about his fellow compatriot: “We are delighted to have signed Gabriel. He is a player we have been studying for a while and he was in demand from many clubs, so we are proud to have agreed and completed this transfer with Lille and the player. Gabriel is a player of high quality and Mikel and his coaches are looking forward to integrating him into the club.”
Mikel Arteta maintained how hopes over now well the acquisition of Gabriel will help the team achieve it's goal.
“We welcome Gabriel to Arsenal. He has many qualities which will make us stronger as a defensive unit and as a team. He has proved with Lille that he is a defender with many outstanding attributes and we are looking forward to watching him grow as an Arsenal player.”
